Value Distribution Map in Global Supply chains
The Smiley Curve, introduced by Stan Shih in the early 1990s, illustrates the uneven distribution of value-
added across a product’s value chain.
Rather than being evenly spread, value is concentrated at both ends of the chain. At the upstream end,
activities such as research, design, and technological development generate high value due to their knowl-
edge intensity and control over core technologies. At the downstream end, branding, marketing, and distri-
bution capture a significant share of profits by controlling market access and customer relationships. By con-
trast, the midstream segment - where manufacturing and assembly take place - typically yields the lowest
value-added, as competition is largely cost-driven and substitution risks are high.
The implications of this model are particularly pronounced for developing economies. Participation in glob-
al value chains does not necessarily translate into value capture. An economy may achieve large-scale pro-
duction, but if it remains concentrated in processing and assembly stages, the majority of value creation -
and profit retention - occurs outside its domestic economy.
Accordingly, the development challenge is not about “producing more,” but about “moving up the value
chain” into higher-value-added segments. This requires strengthening technological capabilities to advance
upstream, building brand equity to expand downstream, and developing robust domestic linkages to retain a
greater share of value within the economy.
